July 25 was National Intern Day and a celebration ofLife-Science SPRINTS (Student Program to Ready Interns for Next-generation Talent). The Greater New Haven Bioscience Collaborative, a Regional Sector Partnership formed out of the Governor’s Workforce Council in partnership with the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce, works to advance a bioscience workforce and career opportunities while building connections between industry leaders and our state-wide university system. Pictured are Southern Connecticut State University students Dylan Hegedus and Miles Bagoly, interns with EvolveImmune Therapeutics this summer. Next up on our roster of summer interns for this year was Harvard Biological and Biomedical Sciences PhD candidate Kelcee Everette, originally from Fort Worth, Texas. When she’s not at work at the university, the lab, or the F-Prime office, you’ll catch Kelcee at her local pottery studio and/or grooving out to some Beyoncè. Recently, Kelcee was kind enough to take some time out and answer a few questions about her experience on F-Prime’s healthcare team in the Cambridge office this summer. Q: How did you learn about F-Prime? A: The professor with whom I conducted my dissertation research is very entrepreneurial, so I learned about F-Prime by researching VCs that fund companies that have spun out of the lab. As someone who has conducted research in an international setting, the firm’s global approach to investing was really compelling. I’ve seen first-hand the awesome work that scientists are doing in other countries and while the U.S. startup scene is booming, I believe great science and therapeutic developments are not limited by borders. It’s been really fulfilling to have an internship experience that allows me to research biotechs abroad and develop a framework to understand how various country-specific factors contribute to innovation in the biotech space of each country. Q: What have you been working on? A: I have been researching the biotech landscape of foreign markets and performing due diligence on interesting licensing opportunities abroad. I have also participated in many introductory and follow-up meetings with prospective US-based companies, where my research expertise and previous work experience have been invaluable in helping me evaluate each opportunity. I’ve learned a lot over the course of the summer and was able to connect with people at all professional levels and across disciplines. One important skill I’ve been able to develop during my time at F-Prime is learning how to become versed in a new area of science within days, which is quite different from my PhD experience of developing deep expertise in one area over many years. Q: What are you most proud of?A: My proudest professional accomplishment was having my dissertation research on prime editing for sickle cell disease published. My proudest personal accomplishment has been learning how to speak a new language (Portuguese) in graduate school. Q: What was your favorite non-work experience in the Boston area this summer?A: My favorite thing I've done for fun this summer was going to the Beyoncè concert. I'm also trying out new restaurants, continuing pottery classes, and hosting social events for my lab.

The last week of the "You Can Do It" Internship Program was marked by a lecture from Dejan Ivanović, Director of Technical Operations for Southeast Europe. Dejan was a scholarship recipient of the Hemofarm Foundation, and today he is one of the leading figures at Hemofarm company. He discussed his career path with the scholarship recipients, the opportunities he created, the obstacles he faced, and how he overcame them."The opportunity for growth is as big as your ambitions. It's important that each of us does our part, even when no one is watching. That's the key to success in large systems, where every link relies on each other. It's also important to respect the rules, especially in pharmaceutical production where people's health and product quality are a priority," Dejan advised the scholarship recipients of the 2023/2024 generation.#YouCanDoIt to follow in the footsteps of Dejan Ivanovic. Apply for the Hemofarm Foundation Scholarship Competition for the 2024/2025 school year, which we will announce in early autumn. 🌟 Reflecting on a Summer of Innovation: Meet Our 2024 Interns, Zeenat Chatha and Peter Olteanu 🌟At PharmaSafe, we had the pleasure of working with two outstanding student interns this summer: Zeenat Chatha and Peter Olteanu. Their contributions have been incredibly valuable to our projects and we couldn’t be more excited to share their achievements with you!Zeenat Chatha"My name is Zeenat Chatha, and I am a Master's student in International Community Health. I am thrilled to join the Pharmacy Department this summer to work on a project titled 'Enhancing Multinational Drug Safety Studies - Mapping the Nordic Varenummer (vareNr) to the Standard Vocabulary.' This project aims to improve the safety and consistency of drug studies across multiple countries. I am excited about the opportunity to contribute to this significant initiative and look forward to collaborating with all of you."Zeenat's work focused on aligning drug identification numbers with a universal standard vocabulary, bringing greater reliability and effectiveness to multinational drug studies. 👏Peter Olteanu"The student summer research project I was selected for has the objective of creating a dashboard for Data Quality Checks, that can be used to systematically process the large amount of raw registry data used by the Pharmasafe research group. The project complements my health economics studies perfectly and it has been an amazing learning experience. I feel a great privilege and responsibility to work on this task and work together with researchers of the highest professional caliber."Peter's project involved developing a cutting-edge dashboard to streamline data quality checks, ensuring the data we use is both accurate and efficient. His work is set to become a key tool in our research processes. 💡A big shoutout to UiO:Life Science for funding these educational summer research projects. In these past months applying to internships, I have been reflecting on the journey that fueled my passion for research. It all started back in senior year of high school when I was given the opportunity to design my own research project. At that time, the escalating threat of antibiotic resistance and the growing interest in alternative methods for treating infections piqued my interest and I decided that would be the topic of my research. As I explored alternative methods I came into the world of “natural” bactericides. I decided to look into white vinegar, melaleuca oil, and the head turner.. Breast milk! I was eager to discover their potential and mechanisms. Despite moments of doubt and countless late nights, I persevered. I designed my protocols, learning and planning to use techniques I had never done before. Checking on my project in between class periods and seeing it yield results fueled my excitement and determination. Presenting my findings at the Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District Science Fair was a moment I'll never forget. I vividly recall the incredulous looks on the judges' faces when they asked how I procured E. coli bacteria. Little did they know, Carolina Biological Supply Company made it accessible for high school students like myself at the time to order it online—a fact that still brings a smile to my face. But the true highlight of that day came when I was awarded the coveted "1st place, Best in Show Prize". It was a validation of my hard work, a testament to my passion for biology, and a pivotal moment in my career as a researcher.Today I carry with me the lessons learned from that high school project. I am dedicated to advancing my studies in the biological sciences, specializing in Microbiology with a Minor in Chemistry at San Jose State University. Additionally, I have had the enriching experience of interning at Sandia National Laboratories, where I have delved deeper into the fascinating realms of microbiology and molecular biology. Anticipating the opportunities that lie ahead, I am eagerly awaiting where my research journey takes me!#InternshipOpportunities #BiologyResearch #CareerDevelopment #ScienceInspiration #ReflectingOnThePast
